Truck Driver Parks – Lead Hand Jobs in Burnaby, Canada at City of Burnaby
This position works in the Grounds Maintenance – Grass and Turf organizational unit. The role involves skilled, routine truck driving work operating vehicles of 24,000 pounds and under, and includes supervising the work of a subordinate. The incumbent loads, transports, and unloads materials, staff, tools, equipment, and supplies under varying traffic and field conditions; supervises, assigns, reviews, and participates in the work of subordinates;
prepares and maintains simple records; and deals tactfully and effectively with the public. The work is distinguished from that of a Truck Driver 1 by the greater supervisory responsibility. Some independence of action and judgment is exercised while remaining within defined operating limits, methods, and procedures. Work is reviewed by a supervisor in terms of safe and efficient vehicle operation and provision of parks maintenance and construction services.
Performs related work as required.
Responsibilities
- Load, transport, and unload materials, staff, tools, equipment, and supplies under varying traffic and field conditions.
- Supervise, assign, review, and participate in the work of subordinates.
- Prepare and maintain simple records.
- Deal tactfully and effectively with the public.
- Accept standby and call‑out work assignments, including snow and ice control work.
- Operate a vehicle for public parks maintenance and construction services.
Qualifications
- Completion of Grade 12 or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Truck driving experience or a combination of training and experience that demonstrates competent truck operation.
- Thorough knowledge of the rules of safe operation and precautions necessary to avoid accidents when driving a truck and installing or operating auxiliary equipment.
- Knowledge of rules and regulations governing the work performed and familiarity with municipal streets and traffic routes.
- Ability to assign, review, and supervise the work of subordinates and to provide training.
- Ability to provide information and explain applicable rules and regulations to the public.
- Ability to follow work schedules and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
- Mechanical aptitude and skill in the operation of a truck under difficult driving conditions and of equipment used on the job.
- Acceptance of standby and call‑out work assignments and the ability to operate a vehicle for snow and ice control work.
- Driver’s licence for the Province of British Columbia is required.
