Role Description:
This is a remote Freight Broker Contractor role which is commission based. The Freight Broker will source and secure freight from customers, match loads with qualified carriers, and negotiate rates to ensure profitable, on-time movements. Daily responsibilities include managing a load board, tracking shipments, resolving service issues, and maintaining clear communication with shippers, carriers, and internal teams. The role involves building and managing accounts, updating transportation management systems, and ensuring accurate documentation for each shipment. The Freight Broker is also expected to develop new business opportunities, maintain strong carrier relationships, and support continuous improvement in service and efficiency.
Duties
- Develop and maintain relationships with clients and carriers to generate new business opportunities and ensure ongoing account satisfaction
- Coordinate transportation logistics using Transportation Management Systems (TMS), EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), and other CRM software to streamline shipments
- Negotiate rates, contracts, and service terms with carriers and clients to optimize pricing and service levels
- Manage the entire freight booking process from quoting, dispatching, to tracking shipments across multiple modes including air freight, ocean freight (NVOCC), and trucking
- Ensure compliance with international trade regulations, FDA regulations for certain shipments, and trade compliance standards
- Provide exceptional customer service by communicating proactively with clients regarding shipment status, delays, or issues
- Conduct data entry and maintain accurate records of shipments, contracts, pricing agreements, and dispatch logs in company systems such as AS400 or equivalent platforms
Skills
- Strong knowledge of supply chain management principles and transportation management systems (TMS)
- Strong Freight Brokerage skills, including sourcing loads, negotiating rates, and managing margins, with an existing portfolio of companies they have a working relationship with.
- Customer Service and Account Management skills to build, retain, and grow shipper relationships.
- Dispatching experience, including coordinating pick-ups and deliveries, and tracking and tracing loads.
- Proven experience in freight brokerage, logistics sales, or transportation planning within a logistics company environment
- Excellent negotiation skills with the ability to close deals effectively while maintaining client satisfaction
- Proficiency in CRM software like Salesforce or similar platforms for client relationship management
- Familiarity with shipping logistics including air freight, ocean freight (NVOCC), 3PL providers, and freight forwarding logistics
- Understanding of international trade regulations, trade compliance standards, and FDA regulations where applicable
- Effective communication skills for client relationship management and inside sales activities
- Ability to handle multiple tasks such as dispatching, data entry, lead generation, pricing strategies, and contract negotiations simultaneously
