POSITION SUMMARY -Salary plus commission
The Brokerage Lead runs the brokerage desk for JMS Transport Services end-to-end, handling the full brokerage cycle — sourcing, quoting, carrier vetting, and load execution — without a book split by region or account tier. This is a combined role: until the desk is built out, the Brokerage Lead carries the full scope that will eventually be split between a Junior Brokerage Lead and a Senior Brokerage Manager. The title reflects that this seat owns the desk in full, not that it manages people — there are no direct reports.
Scope will be split into Junior Brokerage Lead and Senior Brokerage Manager as volume dictates. This position description covers the combined scope in the interim and is not the permanent shape of the role.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Own the brokerage desk full-cycle: sourcing loads, quoting, carrier vetting, and load execution from post to delivery, across all lanes and accounts — not split by junior/senior task lists or region.
- Serve as the first point of escalation for the brokerage desk: carrier disputes, rate pushback, service failures, and delivery exceptions, before they reach the Head of Sales & Operations.
- Build and maintain the vetted carrier network from scratch — there is no existing book split by territory to inherit.
- Flag rate and margin trends by lane to the Head of Sales & Operations — input on where floors need adjusting, not just applying the floors as set.
- Document how the desk is run as it’s built out (workflow, carrier vetting steps, escalation handling) so the work is teachable once the role splits into Junior and Senior.
- Track carrier progress on brokered loads and update the customer or Account side accordingly — pickup, transit status, and delivery.
- Coordinate directly with Account Managers on customer freight needs and with Fleet Management on capacity overlap or conflicts between brokerage and carrier-side loads.
- Report brokerage KPIs to the Head of Sales & Operations on a regular cadence: margin performance, load volume, on-time percentage.
- Cover the full range of desk work personally — administrative and paperwork tasks during low volume, and higher-judgment carrier and pricing calls during high volume — since there is no junior/senior split to divide the load.
REQUIREMENTS
- Brokerage experience across the full cycle — not just quoting or just carrier sourcing, since there’s no one else to hand off the other half to
- Comfortable with ambiguity and building from zero — no existing carrier book, no SOPs yet, no one senior to lean on day-to-day
- Carrier network or the instinct to build one fast — cold-sourcing capacity, not just working an inherited list
- Rate and margin judgment — can price a load and hold a margin floor under pressure from both sides
- Self-directed reporting discipline — surfaces their own numbers and flags problems before being asked

- Has done this solo before (small brokerage, or the only broker on a desk) — proof they can run full-cycle without a team around them
- Documentation instinct — writes down how they work without being told, since this becomes training material for the eventual Junior/Senior split
- Comfortable being the escalation point themselves rather than escalating everything — decisiveness under pressure
- Cross-functional communication — over-communicates status rather than staying heads-down, since this role touches Account Managers and Fleet regularly
