Purpose and Scope
The Transit Supervisor reports to the Manager, Transit Operations and oversees public transportation services, leading, mentoring, and developing the bus operator team. The role monitors on‑street transit service, coordinates operations to meet performance standards, oversees dispatching and operator allocation, and addresses operator and customer service issues.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate safety programs and communications to ensure efficiency and safety
- Assist in the administration of the transit office, including long‑range planning, process improvements, performance ratings, and discipline for operators
- Provide on‑the‑job orientation, training, and supervision to all operators
- Supervise day‑to‑day operations to ensure compliance with route timing, ESA standards, OHS Act, and HTA
- Conduct annual performance appraisals
- Participate in the selection process of bus operators and maintain records
- Prepare administrative reports as required
- Monitor performance of contracted suppliers
- Analyze KPIs and report monthly to the Transit Manager
- Prepare media releases concerning safety, weather impact, and promote website enhancements via social media
- Analyze ridership trends and recommend adjustments to service hours, routes, and scheduling
- Assign work to operators in accordance with the Collective Agreement
- Assist in evaluating locations for bus stops, shelters, and landing pads
- Respond to public requests, complaints, and inquiries
- Investigate and follow up on all accidents or incidents involving transit vehicles, liaising with police and insurance adjusters
- Supervise the development, maintenance, and integrity of the city transit system
- Assist in improving transit ridership, including route maps and user guides
- Assist the Fleet Supervisor with scheduling buses for service and repair
- Work with the Transit Advisory Committee to achieve transit goals
- Perform all tasks through the lens of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, ensuring fairness, representation, accessibility, and respect for diverse perspectives
Education / Training / Specialized Skills
Minimum Qualifications:
- College diploma in business management, operations management or related field
- Valid Class “G” driver’s license with clean driver’s abstract
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of transit operations
- Understanding of administrative policies and procedures related to public transit
- Knowledge of applicable codes, standards and legislation
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite, CAD, and related programs
- Valid Class “C” driver’s license with “Z” endorsement
Work Experience
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum of four (4) years supervisory experience
- Experience managing and supervising in a unionized environment
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with commissions or advisory committees
- Knowledge of the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) relative to public transit and the Highway Traffic Act
- Experience in a municipal transit system
- Demonstrated leadership, communication, decision‑making and public relations skills, capable of giving clear written and oral instructions
