Position Overview:
The Manager of Transportation and Logistics is a key leadership role responsible for overseeing the transportation, distribution, and logistics functions across multiple brands within the company. This individual will manage the company’s freight operations, negotiate cost-effective agreements with freight carriers, maintain optimal service levels with third-party logistics (3PL) providers, and continuously analyze the overall cost structure and service performance of logistics operations.
This position is integral to ensuring efficient and timely movement of goods across domestic and international supply chains, optimizing delivery performance, and aligning logistics strategies with business objectives to support the growth and competitiveness of the company’s diverse portfolio of apparel brands.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Freight Carrier Negotiation and Cost Management:
Negotiate competitive freight rates and service agreements with domestic and international carriers (e.g., ocean, air, and ground freight).
Develop and maintain strong relationships with transportation partners to ensure the best rates and service terms.
Regularly evaluate and compare freight costs to market benchmarks, leveraging volume across multiple brands to negotiate the most favorable rates.
Oversee freight budget and ensure that costs remain within allocated limits while seeking opportunities for cost reduction.
2. Third-Party Logistics (3PL) Partner Management:
Collaborate with 3PL partners to ensure service level agreements (SLAs) are met or exceeded for each brand, including delivery timelines, order accuracy, and customer satisfaction metrics.
Monitor the performance of 3PL warehouses in terms of inventory management, picking and packing accuracy, and overall fulfillment speed.
Proactively address service issues with 3PLs and carriers, resolving any disruptions that may impact brand operations.
Partner with 3PLs to implement continuous improvement initiatives that drive efficiencies and improve service levels.
3. Service Level and Performance Analysis:
Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure logistics performance, including on-time delivery, transit times, shipping accuracy, and overall service costs.
Conduct regular analysis of logistics and transportation data to identify trends, gaps, and areas for improvement in service levels.
Generate reports to track performance metrics and present findings to senior leadership, making recommendations for optimization.
Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including brand managers and supply chain teams, to ensure that logistics services align with each brand’s operational needs and customer expectations.
4. Logistics Strategy and Optimization:
Lead strategic initiatives to optimize shipping routes, reduce lead times, and enhance the efficiency of the logistics network across multiple regions.
Work closely with inventory planning, production, and procurement teams to align logistics capabilities with inventory and supply chain strategies.
Identify opportunities for logistics process automation and system improvements, driving the adoption of best practices and technologies to improve operational performance.
Develop contingency plans for transportation disruptions, ensuring a resilient logistics network that minimizes risk to the business.
5. Compliance and Risk Management:
Ensure all logistics operations comply with international trade regulations, customs requirements, and industry standards.
Stay up-to-date on changing regulations and trends in transportation and logistics, adapting strategies as needed to mitigate risks.
Manage claims and loss prevention related to transportation damage, delays, or other service failures, working with carriers to resolve issues and recover costs.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a related field. Advanced degree or professional certification (e.g., CCLP, APICS, or CSCMP) preferred.
5+ years of experience in transportation, logistics, or supply chain management, preferably in a multi-brand or retail environment.
Proven experience in negotiating freight contracts, managing 3PL relationships, and optimizing logistics performance.
Skills and Competencies:
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends, and make strategic decisions based on performance metrics.
Excellent negotiation skills and a track record of securing favorable rates and terms with logistics providers.
In-depth knowledge of global transportation networks, regulations, and market dynamics.
Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
Proficiency in logistics software, transportation management systems (TMS), and advanced Excel or data analytics tools.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with internal teams and external partners.
Preferred:
Experience working in the apparel industry or a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) environment.
Familiarity with international shipping regulations, tariffs, and customs compliance.
