About the Opportunity:
The Import Specialist II will step into an essential operational compliance role within the Customs Brokerage division, managing customer data processing, trade documentation, and regulatory clearance for international air and ocean import shipments. Functioning as a primary liaison between commercial importers, ocean/air carriers, and federal regulatory agencies, this position ensures full compliance with U.S. tariff schedules and trade laws. Blending logistics tracking with meticulous customs entry prep, the Import Specialist II processes customs bonds, performs tariff classification, coordinates final delivery transport, and resolves hold issues directly with regulatory officials.
Responsibilities:
• Serve as the primary customer service manager and regulatory advisor for key commercial import accounts
• Prepare, verify, and submit accurate customs entry documentation (e.g., Entry Summaries 7501, Immediate Delivery 3461, Bills of Lading, Dock Receipts, and Customs Bonds)
• Communicate directly with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Partner Government Agencies (PGAs) such as the FDA, EPA, and USFWS to clear routine holds and inspections
• Calculate, verify, and execute foreign currency conversions, unit measurement conversions, duty payouts, and freight billing audits
• Trace international freight movements, manage re-routing logistics, and coordinate door-to-door transport from port terminals to final client destinations
• Audit commercial invoices, packing lists, and certificates of origin to ensure compliance with Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) classifications and trade agreements
• Open digital shipment files, input accurate entry data into enterprise logistics ERP systems, and maintain complete audit-ready records
• Address and resolve client inquiries regarding billing, customs holds, shipment status, and carrier delay exceptions
Requirements:
• Possession of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Minimum of three (3) years of recent, practical customs brokerage operational experience managing U.S. import entries
• Practical working knowledge of U.S. Customs and Border Protection regulations, HTS tariff code structure, and PGA clearance workflows (FDA, EPA, USFWS)
• Demonstrated ability to perform metric/imperial conversions and foreign currency calculations with high numerical precision
• Strong communication skills for negotiating with shipping lines, drayage carriers, freight forwarders, and federal agents
• Proficiency with customs entry software, cargo tracking databases, and office productivity tools
Pay Range and Compensation Package:
• Target baseline compensation framework: Highly competitive hourly base rate structured between $20.00 and $30.00 USD per hour
• Onboarding wage placement within this tier is determined dynamically based upon a holistic evaluation of the candidate’s specialized customs brokerage tenure, HTS entry experience, and educational background
