Our client is a well-established international freight forwarder and customs brokerage provider looking to appoint an experienced Licensed Customs Broker to lead their brokerage function in New York.

This is a senior role suited to someone with a strong customs compliance background, proven team management experience, and the confidence to act as a technical escalation point across import operations.

The successful candidate will oversee day-to-day brokerage activity, ensure compliance with CBP regulations, support internal teams and customers, and help drive process improvements across the customs function.

The Role

As the Licensed Customs Broker, you will be responsible for managing the customs brokerage team, overseeing entry activity, supporting compliance programs, and ensuring the business maintains a high standard of accuracy, service, and regulatory control.

You will act as the key technical authority for customs matters, working closely with operations, customers, senior leadership, and government agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and support a team of customs entry writers and brokerage specialists.
  • Oversee customs entry processing to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance.
  • Act as the company’s technical escalation point for customs brokerage and compliance matters.
  • Ensure adherence to CBP regulations, PGA requirements, internal SOPs, and client-specific procedures.
  • Review and advise on HTS classification, valuation, country of origin, duty rates, and admissibility requirements.
  • Support audits, post-entry reviews, CF28/CF29 responses, prior disclosures, protests, and compliance investigations.
  • Develop, maintain, and improve customs compliance procedures and brokerage workflows.
  • Train and mentor brokerage staff, improving technical knowledge and operational performance.
  • Work with clients to provide customs guidance, resolve complex issues, and improve compliance standards.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and communicate relevant updates to internal teams and customers.
  • Partner with senior leadership to identify process improvements, risk areas, and service enhancements.

Requirements

  • Active U.S. Customs Broker License is required.
  • Strong customs brokerage and import compliance experience within freight forwarding, customs brokerage, or logistics.
  • Previous experience managing or supervising a customs brokerage team.
  • Deep understanding of CBP regulations, HTS classification, valuation, country of origin, PGA requirements, and entry procedures.
  • Experience handling audits, post-entry work, customs inquiries, and compliance escalations.
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to train, mentor, and develop staff.
  • Excellent attention to detail and ability to manage risk in a fast-paced operational environment.
  • Confident communicator with the ability to advise customers, internal teams, and senior stakeholders.
  • Strong systems knowledge and comfort working with brokerage platforms and Microsoft Office.
