Overview
VHI Express, Inc. is seeking an experienced, dependable Dispatcher to join our team. We are a fast-paced transportation company specializing in container drayage throughout the Port of Virginia.
We are looking for someone who is organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple drivers and shipments at once. This position requires someone who can think ahead, problem-solve, and take ownership of their workload and proactively manage the operation.
Responsibilities
- Dispatch and manage daily container loads for drivers and owner-operators.
- Coordinate import and export container moves through the Port of Virginia.
- Schedule and monitor port appointments, container availability, LFDs, ERDs, cutoffs, and return locations.
- Coordinate deliveries and appointments with customers, receivers, terminals, and drivers.
- Monitor drivers throughout the day and adjust schedules as needed.
- Communicate load instructions, updates, and changes clearly to drivers and customers.
- Track chassis, containers, equipment, and container returns.
- Monitor driver Hours of Service when planning loads.
- Handle delays, breakdowns, port issues, appointment changes, and other operational problems.
- Review load information and maintain accurate records, including PODs, EIRs/TIRs, and TMS updates.
- Identify and communicate applicable accessorial charges, including detention, storage, prepulls, chassis, and demurrage.
- Work closely with management, accounting, customers, drivers, terminals, and steamship lines to keep freight moving and prevent service failures.
What We’re Looking For
- Previous trucking, transportation, logistics, or dispatching experience strongly preferred; container drayage experience is a major plus.
- Familiarity with the Port of Virginia, VIG, NIT, RMT, and PPCY is a plus.
- Strong computer skills, data-entry skills, and experience working with a TMS.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask and prioritize in a fast-paced environment.
- Dependable, punctual, and comfortable communicating with drivers and customers throughout the day.
- Strong problem-solving skills and good judgment when schedules or circumstances change.
- Able to stay organized, take initiative, and work with minimal direction.
- Experience with PortPro or a similar transportation management system is a plus.
The Right Person for This Position
Transportation does not always go according to plan. A port closure, late vessel, driver breakdown, customer change, or missed appointment can change the entire day.
The right person will be able to stay calm, reorganize the plan, communicate clearly with everyone involved, and keep freight moving.
