Position Summary:
Sun scientific is a compression focused medical device startup seeking a hands-on Director of Supply Chain to build and lead our end-to-end supply chain function.
This is a functional lead role covering warehousing, inventory control, purchasing, and direct coordination with our contract manufacturer and component vendors in China. The ideal candidate thrives in a lean, fast-moving environment and is comfortable operating at both strategic and day-to-day tactical levels.
Role & Responsibilities:
Warehouse & Inventory Management:
- Manage warehouse operations including receiving, put-away, cycle counting, kitting, shipping, and space/layout optimization for a growing SKU base.
- Establish and maintain internal inventory control systems to track raw materials, Work in progress and finished goods at a granular level, including specific items and lots.
- Set min/max and safety stock levels to balance cash flow with supply continuity.
- Own supply chain cost management: track landed costs and report on key metrics (inventory turns, on-time delivery, fill rate).
Purchasing & Procurement
- Lead purchasing and procurement activities: issue and manage POs, negotiate pricing/terms, and maintain approved vendor lists in compliance with quality system requirements.
- Forecast demand in partnership with Sales/Operations to align purchasing and production planning with commercial ramp-up.
- Drive supplier qualification, audits, and risk mitigation (dual-sourcing, safety stock) for critical components.
- Implement and continuously improve SOPs for purchasing and inventory processes as the company scales.
Vendor Coordination (China)
- Serve as primary point of contact for overseas contract manufacturers and component suppliers in China, managing production schedules, quality issues, and lead times.
- Coordinate international freight, customs clearance, and import/export documentation (with freight forwarders/customs brokers) to ensure on-time, compliant delivery.
- Support new product introduction by coordinating tooling, first-article inspection, and ramp planning with China-based manufacturing partners.
- Manage suppliers and the supplier products at a component level, so that we maintain total control over our Bill of Materials.
- Ensure compliance with import/export regulations, customs valuation, and any applicable tariffs affecting China-sourced components.
Supply Chain Quality
- Collaborates with other departments and stakeholders to identify and maintain resources needed to establish and provide an effective supply chain.
- Develops policies to increase efficiency throughout the supply chain while ensuring quality and safety; implements subsequent changes to processes.
- Own end-to-end supply chain strategy, from raw material/component sourcing through finished-goods delivery, in a regulated medical device environment. Identifies optimal shipment and transportation routes with attention to consolidation of warehousing and distribution.
- Assesses the need for material-handling equipment and staffing; makes recommendations to ensure efficient loading, unloading, movement, and storage of materials.
- Participates as an advisory member of the product development team, providing information and guidance on availability and cost of supplies and materials.
Medical Device Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure continued compliance with 21 CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) part 821 while implementing improvements.
- Ensure inventory chain remains compliant by implementing and managing medical device traceability systems
Team Leadership
- Build out the supply chain team over time (planners, warehouse staff, buyers) as the company grows; currently a highly hands-on, individual-contributor-heavy role.
- Responsible for team training and providing leadership.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- 7+ years in supply chain/operations, ideally in healthcare or another regulated hardware industry.
- Direct experience managing manufacturers and/or component suppliers.
- Working knowledge of supply chain quality standard and documentation requirements.
- Proficiency with ERP/inventory systems; startup experience building processes from scratch strongly preferred.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to China and to work onsite in Westchester, NY.
