A freight forwarding company with offices in Accra and Tema is looking to recruit a credit controller.  This role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgement in assessing credit risk, and the ability to balance collection practices whiles maintaining good customer relationship.

Job Summary

The primary purpose of the Credit Controller role is to manage the company’s credit control function monitoring customer accounts, ensuring timely collection of outstanding freight forwarding and logistics invoices, minimizing bad debt exposure, and safeguarding healthy cash flow to support daily operations.

This role requires strong attention to detail, sound judgement in assessing credit risk, and the ability to balance collections practice with maintaining good customer relationships.

Key Duties

1. Credit Control & Collections

•    Monitor customer accounts to identify outstanding debts and follow up to ensure timely payment collection.

•    Contact customers regarding overdue invoices via phone, email, and other appropriate channels.

•    Reconcile customer accounts and resolve billing discrepancies promptly.

•    Negotiate payment plans with customers experiencing difficulty settling accounts, within approved credit policy limits.

•    Escalate high-risk or long-outstanding accounts to the Finance Manager/MD for further action, including legal recovery where necessary.

2. Credit Risk Management

•    Assess the creditworthiness of new and existing customers before extending credit facilities.

•    Set and review customer credit limits in line with company credit policy.

•    Maintain an up-to-date credit risk register, flagging accounts nearing or exceeding approved limits.

•    Recommend suspension of services for customers who breach credit terms, in liaison with Sales and Operations.

3. Reporting & Reconciliation

•    Prepare and circulate weekly and monthly aged debtor reports.

•    Track and report on Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) and overall collection performance.

•    Provide monthly cash flow forecasts related to receivables to the Finance Manager/ MD

4. Customer & Interdepartmental Relations

•    Liaise with Operations and Sales teams to ensure invoicing accuracy and timely release of shipment documents in line with agreed credit terms.

•    Respond promptly to customer queries regarding statements, invoices, and payment terms.

•    Maintain professional relationships with customers to support timely collections without harming the business relationship.

5. Compliance & Documentation

•    Ensure all credit control activities comply with company policies and relevant financial regulations.

•    Maintain accurate, organized records of correspondence, agreements, and payment plans.

•    Support internal and external audits with required documentation.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

•    Reduce Days Sales Outstanding (DSO) to [insert target, e.g. 30] days or below.

•    Achieve at least [insert target, e.g. 95%] collection rate against invoices due within the period.

•    Ensure aged debt over 90 days does not exceed [insert target, e.g. 5%] of total receivables.

•    Submit weekly and monthly aged debtor reports on time, without exception.

•    Resolve billing discrepancies within [insert target, e.g. 14] days of being raised.

Education (Minimum)

•    First Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field.

•    Part or full professional qualification (e.g. ICAG, ACCA, CIMA) is an advantage.

Experience (Minimum)

•    At least 3 years of experience in credit control, accounts receivable, or a related finance role, preferably within a logistics, freight forwarding, or shipping environment.

Core Skills (Minimum)

•    Strong understanding of credit control principles and accounts receivable processes.

•    Knowledge of logistics/freight invoicing and shipment documentation is an advantage.

•    Proficiency in accounting software/ERP systems and MS Excel.

•    Excellent negotiation and communication skills, both written and spoken.

•    Strong attention to detail and good analytical/reporting skills.

•    Ability to work independently while maintaining good working relationships across departments.

•    High level of integrity and professionalism in handling sensitive financial and customer information.
