Contractor Sales Representative
Production Framing & National Home Builders
Department: Sales
Position Type: Full-Time
Reports To: Sales Manager / General Manager
Location: Menifee, CA
Position Summary
Grove Lumber & Building Supplies, a leading wholesale distributor of lumber and building products, is seeking an experienced Contractor Sales Representative to develop and manage relationships with large production framing contractors and national home builders.
This is a high-level sales position requiring direct experience in the production residential construction market. The successful candidate will understand the complexities of supplying high-volume framing operations, including lumber and engineered wood products, project pricing, material takeoffs, purchasing coordination, construction schedules, jobsite deliveries, and changing commodity markets.
We are looking for a sales professional who understands that success in production framing requires more than selling lumber. It requires building long-term customer relationships, understanding each customer’s business, anticipating project requirements, managing pricing and market exposure, and coordinating internally to ensure exceptional execution from quote through delivery.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain, and grow relationships with large production framing contractors, regional builders, and national home builders.
- Identify and pursue new business opportunities within the production residential construction market.
- Manage existing high-volume contractor and builder accounts while developing strategies to increase sales and profitability.
- Develop relationships with key customer decision-makers, including owners, purchasing managers, estimators, project managers, construction managers, and field personnel.
- Prepare and present competitive quotes and proposals for lumber, engineered wood products, structural panels, and related building materials.
- Review project plans, material takeoffs, specifications, and construction schedules to identify customer requirements and sales opportunities.
- Work closely with estimating, purchasing, operations, and logistics to ensure accurate pricing, product availability, and dependable execution.
- Monitor lumber and building-product markets and communicate relevant pricing trends, supply conditions, and purchasing opportunities to customers.
- Negotiate pricing and sales programs while protecting company margins and maintaining long-term customer relationships.
- Understand customer construction schedules and proactively coordinate material requirements and delivery timing.
- Manage customer pricing, contracts, purchase orders, releases, and project-specific requirements.
- Maintain regular communication with customers throughout the project lifecycle to anticipate changes and resolve issues.
- Coordinate with operations and logistics to ensure accurate, complete, and on-time jobsite deliveries.
- Respond quickly and professionally to jobsite issues, shortages, schedule changes, product substitutions, and other customer needs.
- Monitor account profitability, sales volume, gross margin, receivables, and overall account performance.
- Maintain accurate sales forecasts, customer information, project opportunities, and account activity.
- Represent the company professionally with customers, suppliers, and industry partners.
Required Experience
- 5+ years of lumber, building materials, production framing, or residential construction sales experience preferred.
- Direct experience working with large production framing contractors and/or national home builders is required.
- Demonstrated success managing high-volume, multi-project contractor or builder accounts.
- Strong understanding of the production residential framing process and the material requirements associated with large-scale homebuilding.
- Experience selling and/or managing products such as:
- Dimensional lumber
- Engineered Wood Products (EWP)
- I-Joists
- LVL, LSL, and PSL
- OSB and plywood
- Structural panels
- Treated lumber
- Hardware and related framing products
- Working knowledge of lumber grades, species, dimensions, units of measure, and industry terminology.
- Understanding of commodity lumber pricing and the impact of changing markets on project quotations and customer pricing.
- Experience reviewing construction plans, material takeoffs, bids, and project specifications.
- Established relationships within the production framing and homebuilding industry are strongly preferred.
Qualifications
- Proven ability to develop and maintain long-term relationships with sophisticated, high-volume customers.
- Strong sales, negotiation, and account-management skills.
- Excellent understanding of pricing, gross margin, freight, and profitability.
- Ability to balance competitive pricing with company margin objectives.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple customers, projects, bids, and deadlines simultaneously.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with customer executives, purchasing departments, estimators, project managers, superintendents, and field personnel.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to respond quickly to changing jobsite and construction requirements.
- Ability to work collaboratively with purchasing, estimating, operations, logistics, credit, and management.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CRM/ERP systems.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout the assigned market as required.
What Success Looks Like
A successful Contractor Sales Representative will:
- Develop new relationships with major production framing contractors and home builders.
- Expand sales and market share within existing accounts.
- Build a strong pipeline of residential construction projects and opportunities.
- Maintain competitive pricing while achieving established gross-margin objectives.
- Develop a reputation as a trusted resource to customers rather than simply a material supplier.
- Anticipate customer needs and resolve problems before they affect the jobsite.
- Work closely with purchasing and operations to provide customers with dependable product availability and service.
- Maintain strong customer retention and develop long-term, mutually profitable relationships.
- Consistently achieve established sales, gross-margin, and profitability goals.
