Overview
Assigns locomotives and crews to trains to obtain most efficient use of equipment and personnel within assigned railroad territory by performing the following duties.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Supervises and coordinates the activities of train dispatchers
Ensure timely train operations in order to achieve expected service to customers and corporate revenue goals. Work closely with personnel in other departments to achieve goals
Directs and coordinates the activities of the railroad in a safe and efficient manner
Manage and ensure a positive relationship between all of our customers including but not limited to, our class one partners, freight customers, and other interchange partners
Accountable for customer satisfaction through personal contact and monitoring of systems providing accurate accountability of car locations, car hire, demurrage, receivables, and efficient movements of each car move
Develop clearly defined priorities, goals, and schedules for direct reports.
Monitor train movements and conditions affecting movements
Complete monthly dispatcher’s schedule, equalizing hours as much as possible
Reads train orders and schedules to familiarize self with scheduled runs, destination of trains, times of arrivals and departures, and priority of trains
Communicates with crewmembers via two-way radio and multi-line phones any changes in train orders and schedules, updates on weather or environmental conditions, and notification of emergency stops, delays, or accidents
Ensures compliance with all railroad rules, procedures, and regulations for safety, operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
Completes and files paperwork in an organized, timely manner
Monitors and records calls for track warrants along with calls from customers, crewmembers, and outside entities
Attend management meetings on a weekly basis, as scheduled
Other duties as assigned. Trains run day and night, so shift flexibility is a must
Shifts may include morning, afternoon/evening, and overnight. Weekend and holiday hours may also be required.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
Ability to effectively communicate (both speaking and listening) in face to face interactions or over a two-way radio or multi-line telephone
High level of initiative and ability to work well in a team environment
Organization skills; uses time efficiently and sets goals and objectives along with the ability to plan and carry out responsibilities with minimal direction
Ability to maintain professionalism while working in a high-pressure environment
Strong attention to detail and multi-tasking capabilities
Problem-solving skills; identifies and resolves problems in a timely manner
Customer service; ability to manage difficult or emotional customer situations
Ability to write and speak clearly and informatively
Proficient in Microsoft Office Software, RMI, computers, and internet; Type at least 40 average net words per minute
Ability to observe all safety procedures and report potential unsafe conditions
Ability to keep a clean and safe work environment
Ability to build harmonious relationships with your colleagues and supervisors
High School Diploma or GED required; 2-year associate’s degree preferred
At least 5 years of operations/dispatcher experience with a proficiency in the RMI system
This safety-sensitive position will be subject to drug and alcohol screening
