Overview
Summary: Responsible for the operation and maintenance of a passenger vessel, and the activities and job performance of the vessel crew.
Responsibilities
Commands, controls, and operates a passenger vessel in accordance with company policies and procedures, and applicable safety regulations; responsible for navigation, ship-handling, and maneuvering.
Plans and conducts safety drills and training of crew in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and policy; ensures crew proficiency in their duties.
Ensures the vessel under command complies with applicable federal and state regulations, and certificates are current.
Maintains all equipment according to prescribed maintenance schedules and addresses discrepancies promptly; assists mechanics in troubleshooting major mechanical issues.
Maintains high standards of passenger service and motivates crew to perform duties enthusiastically.
Maintains operational and maintenance logs as required.
Ensures vessel appearance and cleanliness meet high standards.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations, seamanship, and maritime safety procedures.
In-depth understanding of marine machinery, equipment, systems, and repair methods, along with environmental considerations.
Excellent navigation and ship handling skills.
Strong interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in ship handling, navigation techniques, and marine electronic equipment including radar, depth sounder, and chartplotter.
Ability to foster teamwork and maintain crew morale.
Effective supervision and maintenance management skills.
Competence in preparing detailed logs, reports, and records; effective communication skills; proficiency with computers.
Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends and holidays, and overnight as needed.
Ability to work with the public providing assistance and information.
Strong time management and stress handling abilities.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Problem-solving skills and physical ability to perform strenuous work, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications:
U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master’s License.
Current Medical Card, TWIC card, FCC Radio Operators Certificate.
At least 5 years of Captain or First Mate experience on vessels rated 50 tons or more, with operational experience in Southeast Alaska waters.
Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
Ability to pass drug testing and background checks.
Preferred Qualifications:
Mechanical skills and marine maintenance knowledge.
Experience with passenger transportation operations.
Radar Observer endorsement.
